Los Angeles, Long Beach area, Queen Mary transatlantic. September 2005.Bigger, faster and more powerful than her predecessor the Titanic, Queen Mary lived a long life that included 1,001 successful Atlantic crossings. Built at the John Brown shipyard on the Clyde, Scotland, in 1937, the Queen Mary held the record for the fastest-ever North Atlantic crossing, and for three years she carried the rich and famous across the Atlantic in great luxury.
Now Queen Mary rests in the Long Beach harbor, converted into a hotel and tourist attraction. Guides' voices echo in the now-empty engine room, where 27 boilers once generated 160,000 horsepower.

Malaren, Sweden's third-largest lake, meets the Baltic Sea in the heart of Stockholm, a strategic stop on the trade routes between the continent and the interior of Sweden. Ever since the first settlers staked out their positions here, over a thousand years ago, the Malaren valley has remained the cultural heartland of the country. The area is particularly rich in palaces because of its proximity to Stockholm; the palatial building-boom along the shores of Malaren reached its peak in the 17th and 18th centuries.
